Guard your heart, attack!

This headline is NOT a typo.  It is meant to draw your attention to the fact that each year over 500,000 people die from heart disease.  Please do not let yourself fall into this statistic.  Be on guard and attack the problem from the beginning.  Come on, we just started the year, and now is a great time to establish some heart healthy habits.  So what can you do to guard your heart?

For one thing, you can watch what you eat.  If you consume generous amounts of products like milk, eggs, and red meat, you may be setting yourself up for excessive levels of cholesterol.  It will build up in the blood and cause heart problems.  Put down that breakfast sandwich and have a bowl of oatmeal.  Cut back on your portions.  Incorporate more fruits and vegetables in your diet.

There is also exercise.  Try to walk around more each day.  If you have an office, stand up and do some squats.  After a few days, you will have more energy and you may even find that you feel better.  These are minor lifestyle changes that can help you to guard your heart, make you feel good, and open the door to a happier 2017 for you.

This principle of guarding our hearts is even noted in the Bible.  While the Bible refers to spiritual and emotional health, prayer and meditation can also have a beneficial impact on your physical heart.  Quiet times in meditation and reflection can reduce stress, which can negatively affect our physical health.

So what are you waiting for?  Make a commitment to take better care of your body.  Minor changes in your diet increased physical activity, and even quiet times of reflection can all serve to increase your heart health.  There is only one you in the entire universe.  Guard your heart!
