I sat down with the incredible author and poet Melinda Moses also known as Melinda the Writer.  We spoke about her past, present, and future.  We got personal and found out some of the things that influence her, drive her to succeed, and her future goals.  In addition, we delved into her writing process and found out what she enjoyed most about writing her books.  Let’s hop right in!

Tell us a little about where you are from?

I’m from St.Vincent W.I.  I was raised in Brooklyn, New York, and currently reside in Prince George’s County, MD.

What cultural influences had an impact on how you wrote your book?

There weren’t necessarily any culture influences that had an impact on me writing my novel. I was a poet before I became an author and I attend open mic events in the DMV area. One day I decided to write a novel based on some of my poetry and movies I would often watch. I just put it all together and came out with my own storyline for a fiction novel.

What is your parents’ background, and does it influence your writing?

My parents background is Caribbean, they were both born and raised in St.Vincent, W.I.

There background was not an influence on my writing. My childhood played a big part in me becoming a writer because often times I struggled with things I couldn’t explain and writing became my outlet. It helped me with my frustration.

Tell us a little about your current books that are out?

My first novel is entitled: Karma Has Arrived; which you can find on Amazon.com in paperback and kindle. It’s a suspense, drama fiction novel.

Karma Has Arrived II is also on Amazon. It’s the continuing story of one man, three women and how everyone around them gets caught up in lies, betrayal, greed and dark secrets.

I also have an inspirational calendar entitled “Karma”. It consists of inspirational quotes to help people with stress. Also it comes with pictures and two bonus poems about my first two novels. You can also find the 2016 inspirational calendar on Amazon ( Melinda calendar).

Tell us a little about your future goals?
My goals are to continue to write, build an empire and to help those in need. I disturbed funds to the homeless from my first novel. My main gain is to grow as an author and to help people through my writing.

What advice do you have to give to aspiring authors?
The best advice I can give someone is to believe in yourself, pray and also to stay positive. And also stay in school.

What drives you to succeed?

What drives me to succeed is knowing I have a purpose. And that is to focus and change, to support the greater good.

Do you inject any of yourself into your characters?  If so, who has the most of you?

When writing novels I do inject myself into one of the characters. Her name is Ariel Summers, I don’t agree with some of her actions but our personality are quite similar.

Tell us a little about your writing process?

My writing process is simple. I’m usually in a quiet area or outside on a hot day. Listening to R&B and 90’s hip-hop music and reflecting on things I can make a story out of.

What was your favorite part about writing these books?
My favorite part about writing my book is the mystery aspect of the novel. I love to keep people guessing.
